About Ferro Silicon Magnesium

Ferro Silicon Magnesium is a master alloy of Magnesium with Iron and Silicon. Known for its critical role in the production of ductile iron (otherwise known as nodular cast iron or SG iron), Ferro Silicon Magnesium facilitates the formation of spheroidal graphite structures, improving the iron's strength, ductility and resistance to wear.

This alloy is highly valued in the foundry industry due to its ability to produce clean and controlled metallurgical reactions, resulting in uniform quality in the final product. Ferro Silicon Magnesium serves as a reliable nodulising agent, making it an important component in the manufacturing of automotive parts, pipes, and heavy-duty machinery components.

Production of Ferro Silicon Magnesium

There are a number of ways to produce Ferro Silicon Magnesium including melting Magnesium metal with molten Ferro Silicon, the silicothermic process which involves using Ferro Silicon (sometimes combined with Aluminium to become an aluminosilicothermic process) to reduce calcinated dolomite ore or using carbon as a reducing agent in an electric arc furnace (carbothermic process).

Some producers use recycled Magnesium and steel chips ground into powders then add rare earth, Calcium and other additives to achieve the desired chemistry before using plastic deformation techniques and heat treatment. This method is more sustainable, avoids the addition of unwanted impurities and carries economic benefits.

Once the alloy has been melted, it is either cast and cooled or cooled and crushed to size.

Uses of Ferro Silicon Magnesium

Ferro Silicon Magnesium serves as a nodulising agent, promoting the formation of spherical graphite in cast iron. It also acts as a deoxidiser and desulphuriser in steel production. It is used in the production of Carbon Steel, Silicon Steel, Stainless Steel and high-quality iron castings which are commonly used in the automotive industry for components requiring strength, durability and precision.

Ferro Silicon Magnesium FAQs

What are the benefits of using Ferro Silicon Magnesium in cast iron production?

Ferro Silicon Magnesium promotes the formation of nodular graphite instead of flake graphite in cast iron, boosting its tensile strength, flexibility, and fatigue resistance. This results in better performance and durability for multiple industrial applications.

What factors should be considered when selecting Ferro Silicon Magnesium?

Key factors include the chemical composition, particle size and the temperature of the melt. For example, higher Magnesium content can enhance nodularisation but may increase reactivity; higher Calcium content would help to stabilise the reaction at higher treatment temperatures; and a smaller particle size may be suitable for smaller batches of molten iron but would dissolve too quickly for larger batches.

What is the difference between a noduliser and an inoculant?

An inoculant promotes graphitisation and refines the grain structure giving enhanced fluidity and a more uniform distribution of graphite particles. A noduliser is used to introduce Magnesium into a melt, which also promotes graphitisation but in the form of spherical graphite nodules. Inoculants help to control the process of solidification and avoid the formation of carbides resulting in increased strength, toughness and improved mechanical properties. Nodulisers help to significantly increase strength, ductility, impact resistance, wear resistance and machinability and also minimise the risk of crack propogation.

Westbrook Resources sell inoculants such as Ferro Silicon and Ferro Silicon Zirconium and nodulising agents such as Nickel Magnesium and Ferro Silicon Magnesium.
