About Ferro Vanadium

Ferro Vanadium is a Noble Alloy formed by combining Iron and Vanadium with a Vanadium content range of 35%-85%. Ferro Vanadium is a universal hardener, strengthener and anti-corrosive additive for steels like high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel, tool steels, as well as other ferrous-based products. Ferro Vanadium was first used in the production of the Ford Model T and is still widely used in the automobile industry today.

Production of Ferro Vanadium

Ferro Vanadium is produced either through aluminothermic or silicothermic reductions of vanadium pentoxide (Vâ‚‚Oâ‚…) in the presence of Iron. In the aluminothermic reduction process, vanadium pentoxide is mixed with Aluminum powder and Iron, then ignited to initiate an exothermic reaction that reduces the vanadium oxide to metallic vanadium, which bonds with the Iron. The silicothermic reduction method uses Silicon (often as Ferro Silicon) as a reductant of vanadium pentoxide in an electric arc furnace. Once the Silicon has reduced the vanadium pentoxide to metallic vanadium, this then interacts with the Iron to form Ferro Vanadium.

The resulting alloy typically contains between 35% and 85% Vanadium, depending on the desired specification. Once cooled, the Ferro Vanadium is crushed into the appropriate size for use primarily as a strengthening and corrosion-resistant additive in steel production. Westbrook Resources Ltd’s Ferro Vanadium contains 78-83% Vanadium.

Key Properties of Ferro Vanadium

Ferro Vanadium, as an additive to the production process of ferrous metals, will impart several desirable properties upon the resulting new compound. One of the primary benefits of adding Ferro Vanadium to an alloy is its stability against alkalis as well as sulphuric and hydrochloric acids.

Additionally, the adding of Ferro Vanadium to an alloy can result in a steel product less susceptible to corrosion of any type. Ferro Vanadium is also used to reduce weight while simultaneously increasing the tensile strength of the material.

Uses/Benefits of Ferro Vanadium

Ferro Vanadium is an important alloy in the steel industry for enhancing strength, hardness, and durability. It is used in HSLA steels for construction, automotive, and aerospace applications, improving wear and corrosion resistance. The wear resistance properties of Ferro Vanadium makes it ideal for use in manufacturing tools, pipes, axles, bicycle frames, gears and in high-speed tool steels (HSS) which are also used in surgical instruments.

It is also used in the renewable energy sector enhancing the performance and reliability of wind turbine components and solar panel frames.

Ferro Vanadium brings a number of benefits:

  • Enhanced wear and corrosion resistance - Enables the steel to be able to withstand harsh conditions and high mechanical stress.

  • Improved Safety - As this produces more durable steel, it reduces the risk of structural collapses and accidents.

  • Consistent Quality - With a uniform grain in the steel, an increase in the predictability of the performance is present.

Ferro Vanadium FAQs

What industries benefit the most from Ferro Vanadium?

There are many important industries that benefit from the utilisation of Ferro Vanadium, such as:

  • Automotive

  • Renewable Energy

  • Construction

  • Manufacturing

  • Aerospace

How is Ferro Vanadium produced?

Ferro Vanadium is produced either through aluminothermic or silicothermic reductions. Aluminothermic reduction involves heating vanadium pentoxide (Vâ‚‚Oâ‚…) with Aluminium powder, while silicothermic reduction uses Vâ‚‚Oâ‚…, Iron, and Silicon in an electric arc furnace. Both methods yield Ferro Vanadium with content typically ranging from 35% to 85%.

Does the use of Ferro Vanadium in steel help to reduce the carbon footprint?

Due to the increased yield strength, less Vanadium alloyed steel is required in construction to achieve the same structural performance as carbon manganese steel. With less steel being required in infrastructure this saves raw materials and energy consumption enhancing the sustainability of the construction industry and reducing the carbon footprint.
