About Nickel Magnesium

Nickel Magnesium is a master alloy of Nickel and Magnesium. Adding relatively small amounts of Magnesium improves the ductility by refining the grain structure improving its mechanical properties. As Magnesium is a highly reactive metal, it is prone to a higher rate of corrosion. However, combining Magnesium with a highly corrosive resistant metal such as Nickel gives the benefits of using Magnesium in a melt without weakening its properties. The Magnesium recoveries are high and consistent due to the relative densities and high solubility of Magnesium in Nickel. The alloy has a high strength-to-weight ratio making it ideal for use in aerospace and automotive engineering.

Production of Nickel Magnesium

The production of Nickel Magnesium involves melting the relevant quantities of Nickel and Magnesium in an induction furnace at high temperatures. The alloy is stirred and cooled slowly to ensure optimal distribution of the Magnesium and then cast producing alloys with consistent quality and homogeneity. Westbrook Resources partners with trusted industry producers of Nickel Magnesium to ensure consistent quality and reliable supply.

Uses of Nickel Magnesium

Nickel Magnesium is widely used in the production of SG Iron (Spheroidal Graphite Iron), otherwise known as ductile iron or nodular cast iron. The addition of Magnesium to molten iron transforms graphite flakes to spheroids (nodularisation). This change to the grain structure improves its mechanical properties and ductility. The alloy forms protective oxide layers on its surface when exposed to water or air giving it excellent corrosion resistance properties. In addition, Nickel Magnesium enhances the strength and toughness of the final cast. The versatility of Nickel Magnesium also makes it valuable in desulphurisation processes and the alloying of special steels and super alloys. Nickel Magnesium alloys are also suitable for welding, which allows for easier integration into complex structures and components.

Key Properties of Nickel Magnesium

Nickel Magnesium alloys are renowned for their high strength, excellent corrosion resistance and heat stability, making them suitable for demanding environments. The Magnesium content means they are light-weight and provide superior malleability over pure Nickel. Nickel Magnesium also exhibits uniform distribution of Magnesium, which plays a critical role in improving the mechanical properties of cast irons and specialised steel grades.

Nickel Magnesium FAQs

What is the difference between the various grades of Nickel Magnesium?

Each grade of Nickel Magnesium (NiMg) i.e. 1A, 1M, 3, and 4 has specific compositions designed to meet different industry requirements. The variations in Magnesium and Nickel content allow for tailored properties such as strength, corrosion resistance, and heat tolerance. NiMg Number 3 has the highest Nickel content of over 94.5% and NiMg Number 4 has the lowest but also contains 32-36% of Iron to add strength. NiMg Numbers 1A and 1M are similar to each other with marginally different levels of Silicon, Aluminium and Carbon.

What are the advantages of using Nickel Magnesium alloys in steelmaking?

Nickel Magnesium alloys improve the mechanical properties of steel by enhancing its strength, ductility and resistance to wear and corrosion. The controlled addition of Magnesium with a uniform distribution within the alloy improves the machinability of steel, reduces the impurities by desulphurisation and deoxidation and helps to produce high-strength, low weight steel.

How is Nickel Magnesium used in the production of ductile iron?

Nickel Magnesium is added to molten iron during the production of ductile iron to transfer the graphite structure from flake to Spheroidal Graphite (hence why it is also called SG Iron). This enhances the mechanical properties of the Iron (i.e. via the Magnesium content) and the Nickel content enhances the strength, toughness and wear resistance.
