MILLED FERRO SILICON
Milled Ferro Silicon 15% is manufactured by melting Ferro Silicon 75% and steel scrap in an induction furnace. The molten alloy is cast into slabs, allowed to cool, and then broken into lumps. It is then crushed in two stages and milled and air classified into various powder sizes.

Key Properties
The principal properties of Milled FeSi 15% are magnetism, corrosion resistance and density. The particle shape is angular as a result of the milling process. The addition of small amounts of Titanium & Aluminium aids the Silicon in the corrosion resistance properties.

Milled Ferro Silicon In Industry
Milled Ferro Silicon 15% is utilised in Heavy Media Separation (aka ‘Dense Media Separation’ or ‘DMS’ or ‘Sink/Float Plants’) used in the mining and scrap processing industries. Heavy medium separation is a gravity separation technique which creates a medium with a specific density. This medium allows lights to float and heavies to sink, thus permitting separation due to density. Whether this be particular ores from gangue in mining or non-ferrous metals in the scrap industry. Normally, it applies to plants operating at cutting densities below 3.2g/cm³.

FAQs
What’s the difference between Milled & Atomised Ferro Silicon?
Milled Ferro Silicon is produced by crushing ferro silicon into angular shaped particles of varying sizes in a ball mill. Conversely, Atomised Ferro Silicon is made by melting Ferro Silicon 75% with steel scrap and pouring the stream of liquid metal into high pressure water jets. This process creates relatively spherical particles with enhanced corrosion resistant properties.
However, both can be used in dense media separation cutting the density at different levels.

How is Milled and Atomised Ferro Silicon handled & stored?
Firstly, when storing Milled and Atomised Ferro Silicon, the storage area should be free from sources of contamination and away from conflicting substances. It should also be stored in a dry, cool and well-ventilated area, in order to prevent moisture absorption. When handling Milled Ferro Silicon, our workers are equipped with PPE, such as gloves, masks and eye protection.

What criteria should be considered when choosing Milled or Atomised Ferro Silicon 15%?
Mining and non ferrous scrap operations utilising Heavy Media Separation will generally apply the following methodology:
-
Where the cutting density required is 2.2 – 3 g/cm3, Milled FeSi is generally used.
-
Where the cutting density required is 3 – 3.85 g/cm3, Atomised FeSi is generally used. Contact our team for more advice and information.
