About Medium Carbon Ferro Manganese
Medium Carbon Ferro Manganese (MCFeMn) is an important alloy used in the steelmaking industry. This alloy contains Manganese and Iron with a controlled Carbon content, making it an important addition in producing special steel grades.
When liquid Silico Manganese is reacted with Manganese Ore or a high Manganese Oxide rich slag, the Silicon is oxidised increasing the Manganese content of the alloy without an increase in the Carbon content. This method is commonly used to produce grades of refined (Medium and Low Carbon) Ferro Manganese.
The price of Ferro Manganese alloys increases as the Carbon content is reduced.
Production
Medium Carbon Ferro Manganese can be produced through a smelting process that involves reducing Manganese Ore with Carbon in an electric arc furnace. This method allows control over the Carbon content, which typically ranges between 1.0% and 1.5%. An alternative method is to refine High Carbon Ferro Manganese with Oxygen to oxidise the Carbon at controlled temperatures to achieve the desired levels of Carbon in the Ferro Manganese.
Uses

FAQs
What is the difference between Medium Carbon and High Carbon Ferro Manganese?
The main difference lies in the Carbon content. Medium Carbon Ferro Manganese contains 1.0–1.5% Carbon, while High Carbon Ferro Manganese typically contains 6–7.5% Carbon. Medium Carbon Ferro Manganese is preferred for applications requiring lower Carbon levels to meet specific steel specifications. High Carbon Ferro Manganese is used in more general steelmaking.
What certifications and compliance does Westbrook Resources hold?
Westbrook has full ISO 9001 accreditation verifying a robust quality management system meeting international standards and customer satisfaction. We are approved as an Authorised Economic Operator, an internationally recognised quality standard demonstrating that our role in the supply chain is secure and our customs controls are compliant and efficient.
Westbrook are fully REACH registered, both in the EU, via our Irish subsidiary company, and in the UK including registrations for Iron and Manganese.
Westbrook complies with all local and national laws, regulations and standards in each and every country we operate in. We maintain conflict-free sourcing of materials supporting fair trade practices across our supply chain.
