About Low Carbon Ferro Manganese

Low Carbon Ferro Manganese (LCFeMn) is an important Manganese Alloy in the steelmaking industry worldwide, playing an role in improving hardness, durability and workability. When liquid Silico Manganese is reacted with Manganese Ore or a high Manganese Oxide rich slag, the Silicon is oxidised increasing the Manganese content of the alloy without an increase in the Carbon content. This method is commonly used to produce grades of refined (Medium and Low Carbon) Ferro Manganese.

The price of the alloys increase as the Carbon content is reduced.

Production

Low Carbon Ferro Manganese is produced through a specialised metallurgical process that typically involves the reduction of Manganese Ore using Carbon sources such as coke or coal in a submerged arc furnace. To achieve the low Carbon content required, the production process uses additional refining steps, such as using Silico-Manganese alloys as a reductant, minimising the content of impurities.

Uses

  • Steelmaking: Essential in the production of low carbon steel, particularly for desulphurisation and deoxidation. Also contributes to grain refinement improving the mechanical properties.

  • Stainless Steel Manufacturing: Improves strength, abrasion resistance and toughness in stainless steel grades.

  • Foundry Applications: Used in cast iron and steel foundries to remove impurities and improve hot-working properties.

  • Welding: Low Carbon Ferro Manganese is a key component in making mild steel welding electrodes.

  • Railway Industry: Used in the production of steel used in railway tracks adding strength, durability and the wear resistance required for such demanding conditions.

  • Automotive Industry: Integral in manufacturing lightweight and high-strength components for vehicles.

  • Construction Sector: Contributes to the production of structural steel (high-strength, low-alloy/HSLA) used in building infrastructure.

  • Energy Production: Supports the creation of durable materials for energy and power generation equipment.

FAQs

What are the key benefits of using Low Carbon Ferro Manganese?

  • Improved steel quality and durability.

  • Improved wear resistance.

  • Lower impurities in the final product.

  • Greater control over steel composition during manufacturing.

What is the difference between Low Carbon and High Carbon Ferro Manganese?

Our Low Carbon Ferro Manganese has a Carbon content below 0.1%, making it ideal for specialty steels which require high purity levels. High Carbon Ferro Manganese contains around 6–7.5% Carbon and is used in general steelmaking where Carbon content is less critical.

What are the advantages of using Low Carbon Ferro Manganese over pure Manganese Metal?

Manganese helps to increase the hardness of iron without a reduction in its malleability or toughness. Pure Manganese Metal is hard but brittle. Alloying it with iron, improves its strength and reduces the melting point leading to more efficient alloying and less issues with porosity and shrinkage.
