Uses of Chrome Metal
Mainly used for the creation of metal alloys, used to harden steel, to manufacture stainless steel (named as it won’t rust). Chromium plating can be used to give a polished mirror finish to steel.
Key Properties
Chrome’s name is derived from the Greek word Chroma to mean colour, due to the many colourful compounds made from it. Chrome does not occur freely in nature, but rather as the mineral Chromite.
Chrome Metal is a steely grey, lustrous, hard and brittle transition metal. It can be highly polished whilst resistant to tarnishing.

What is the tenuous link between Chrome and Westbrook’s location in Sheffield?
All stainless steel contains Chrome to impart corrosion/tarnish resistant properties whilst also giving stainless steel its shiny appearance. The industrial production of stainless steel was initially developed, here in Sheffield, in 1912-1913 by the research facility of a company called Firth Brown Steels, which is now part of Sheffield Forgemasters.
Where does the majority of the world’s Chromium come from?
South Africa is home to the vast majority of the world’s Chromite deposits and remains the largest producer of Chromium in the world by a significant margin. China is the largest consumer of Chromium, the largest producer of Ferro Chrome and the largest producer of stainless steel.
