About Calcium Silicon Manganese
Calcium Silicon Manganese (or ‘Calcium Manganese Silicon’) is an alloy of Silicon, Calcium & Manganese.
In steel production, Calcium Silicon Manganese is added to remove oxygen and sulphur impurities from molten steel whilst also modifying inclusions. This helps improve the overall quality of the steel, making it stronger and more durable.
Uses
Calcium Silicon Manganese is used as a deoxidiser, desulphuriser and inclusion modifier in steel manufacturing. It also acts as a warming agent, increasing the temperature of the melt.
During steelmaking, oxygen can cause unwanted reactions, forming oxides that negatively impact the quality of the steel. Calcium Silicon Manganese acts as a deoxidiser by binding with oxygen to form stable compounds that are easily removed from the molten steel.
Sulphur in steel can lead to multiple issues, such as brittleness and cracking. Calcium Silicon Manganese effectively removes sulphur by forming calcium sulphide (CaS), which is easily removed during the steel refining process.
Key Properties
Reduces the inclusion of molten steel effectively, improves the fluidity in molten steel and avoids pin-holing in steel billets. It is an alloy of Silicon with 14-16% Calcium and 14-16% Manganese.

FAQs
How does Calcium Silicon Manganese improve the steel refining process?
Calcium Silicon Manganese is added to steel as a deoxidiser and desulphuriser. It removes oxygen, preventing the formation of oxides, which can weaken the steel. It also reduces sulphur, helping to prevent cracking and other issues that arise during forging and casting.
What are the benefits of using Calcium Silicon Manganese over Silico Manganese?
Both Silico Manganese and Calcium Silicon Manganese are used as deoxidisers and desulphurisers. Adding Calcium to steel has a number of benefits but it is more challenging to add pure Calcium metal rather than as a Calcium Alloy. Calcium can reduce the nitrogen content in the steel and also has a higher oxygen absorption rate than Silicon. Note that Westbrook Resources can also supply you with pure Calcium metal. Calcium treatment of liquid steel improves steel properties such as improved mechanical properties, machinability, surface quality/polishability, steel castability by minimising nozzle clogging and reduced susceptibility of reheat cracking.
Calcium Silicon Manganese has a lower melting point and faster melting speed which can reduce the refining time and power consumption. It also improves the fluidity of molten steel and helps to avoid pin-holing in steel billets.
What are the benefits of using Calcium Silicon Manganese over Silico Manganese?
As mentioned above, Calcium is a more efficient deoxidiser than Silicon and it also has a high affinity to sulphur. However, Calcium has a relatively low boiling point (lower than steel meaning Calcium is in a gaseous phase at steelmaking temperature). This means that suitable addition methods are necessary for deoxidation with Calcium.
