About Calcium Silicide

Production

Calcium Silicide is also called Calcium Disilicide and is an alloy of Silicon, Calcium and Iron. The production of Calcium Silicide involves the reaction of Calcium and Silicon at high temperatures in an electric arc furnace. A precise amount of Iron is also introduced during this process to improve the alloy's properties.

Uses of Calcium Silicide

It is used in the form of powder and lumps, in the iron and steel industry, as a powerful deoxidiser and desulphuriser. This is owing to the high affinity of Calcium, for Oxygen, Sulphur and other elements. In particular, it is used in the foundry industry for inoculating grey cast iron.

Key Properties

Since the density of Calcium is 6 times less than that of Iron and its boiling point is close to the melting point of steel. It is generally used as an alloy of Silicon with 28-32% Calcium and 60-65% Silicon.

Calcium Silicide FAQs

Are there any considerations when handling or storing Calcium Silicide?

Calcium Silicide can react with moisture to release hydrogen gas, which is highly flammable. Therefore, it must be stored in dry conditions in airtight containers, and handling should follow strict safety protocols, including wearing appropriate protective gear and ensuring proper ventilation.

Are there alternative materials to Calcium Silicide?

While alternatives like Calcium Carbide and other reducing agents exist, Calcium Silicide is often preferred for its high efficiency in simultaneously removing both oxygen and sulphur in a single processing step. This capability streamlines deoxidation and enhances overall production efficiency, making Calcium Silicide a valuable choice. Calcium Silicide is also more stable in air than Calcium Carbide making it safer to handle and store.

What is the difference between Calcium Silicide and Calcium Silicate?

Calcium Silicide (CaSiâ‚‚) and Calcium Silicate (Caâ‚‚SiOâ‚„) are two distinct compounds with different properties and uses. Calcium Silicate is a compound of Calcium Oxide and Silicon Dioxide whereas Calcium Silicide is an alloy of Calcium, Silicon and Iron. Calcium Silicate is used in fireproofing and insulation in the construction industry and in the production of cement and ceramics whereas Calcium Silicide is used in metallurgical processes.
