About Aluminium Deoxidants

Aluminium Deoxidants are used in the metallurgical industry, particularly in the steel and foundry sectors. These deoxidants are used to remove excess oxygen from liquid steels and prepare Aluminium surfaces for processing. By introducing Aluminium as a deoxidising agent, it reacts strongly with oxygen to form stable aluminium oxides, which can be easily separated from the molten metal.

Production

The majority of Aluminium Deoxidants are produced from melting Aluminium scrap in a furnace, removing impurities and then casting it into various forms such as bars, sticks and stars to suit different applications. Each Aluminium Deoxidant form is designed to dissolve in molten metal.

Uses of Aluminium Deoxidants

Aluminium Deoxidants are a more powerful deoxidiser than Ferro Manganese or Ferro Silicon. By minimising oxygen content, Aluminium Deoxidants prevent the formation of oxides, which can lead to weak points or defects in the metal. Adding Aluminium also helps to control the grain size improving the strength and toughness of the alloy. This makes them important in producing steel, alloys, and other metal products that require a high degree of cleanliness and precise chemical compositions.

FAQs

How do I determine the right form of Aluminium Deoxidant for my application?

The choice of Aluminium Deoxidant form (bars, sticks, stars etc) depends on factors such as the size of your furnace, the type of alloy being produced, the specific deoxidation requirements, the efficiency of dispersion and the method of introduction to the melt.

How does Aluminium deoxidation affect the steel's final properties?

Aluminium deoxidation can significantly improve the steel's final properties, such as tensile strength, toughness, and resistance to cracking. It also helps prevent the formation of gas bubbles and inclusions, which can lead to structural weaknesses.

Is Aluminium deoxidation environmentally friendly?

The process does not produce significant pollutants, as long as by-products like Aluminium oxide are properly managed/recycled. Using Aluminium can also reduce energy consumption in some cases by improving metal quality and reducing rework. The use of Aluminium Deoxidants in secondary Aluminium assists in recycling Aluminium, which therefore carries environmental benefits, in fact the majority of Aluminium Deoxidants themselves are produced from recycled Aluminium. However, the initial production process of Aluminium Deoxidants requires significant energy resources, uses compounds (i.e. acids and alkalines) that can cause environmental damage if not disposed of correctly and carbon emissions can be significant.
